Martin, a PhD candidate at Rhodes University, has created the Mother Hydro-rug project, as a public ‘tactile’ story-telling project that situates itself as an intersectional environment and social justice conversation, aimed at surfacing new approaches to care for our oceanic common spaces. Inspired by her 22 years of conservation experience, and her personal struggles with the sector’s apolitical and historical amnesia, along with her her role as founder of The Beach Co-op, Martin began to explore new reparative approaches to marine conservation, that focus on post-human and feminist care ethics.. She walks (strand-loops), swims, and kayaks along False Bay’s coastline. The Mother Hydro-rug invites participants to weave tapestries from beach plastic and cloth, intertwining personal stories with South Africa's waterways. This collaborative artwork serves as a powerful tool for healing and reconciliation, confronting historical injustices while fostering community engagement and stewardship of marine environments.
