Kristen McClarty’s series "The Residuals" speaks of the trace left by humans in general, but the artist specifically, as she passes through a space. Bits of her that slough off on things she touches, rock, water, air. And then how those bits of her accumulate over time, interacting with what you leave behind, and what she leaves behind after that. A layering of trace. An unavoidable register of the decisions, actions and inactions of a collective society as it engages with an environment.
In these pieces McClarty carves and prints a body passing through water. Sometimes discernible and sometimes not, an abstract form that needs to be pointed out to be seen. Discombobulated and distorted in a liquid. That body is hers. She leaves a trace.
