Dominic de Villiers is a surfboard shaper, environmentalist and multi-medium artist living and creating in Kommetjie, Cape Town. His biggest inspiration for work and for life has been nature. Most of his work is based around sustainability and spirituality; trying to draw the parallel between the two, on a physical and conceptual level. Dominic also looks at themes surroundings land ownership and displacement of land as well as the ever growing feeling of community and togetherness amongst the modern day hardships of our society.
Often exploring these themes in abstract drawings and paintings, it is the process of making that Dominic is able to sit with the themes and issues he is dealing with. His works aim to evoke an emotive response, rather than a logical meaning. One can think of it as having an emotive response to ambient music or sounds - one is able to feel a subjective and personal feeling towards the works.
He would like his art to take him to paths of sustainability and community. Working alongside people, creating interesting things and spaces for people to learn about the harmony between ourselves and the Earth, Dom places big emphasis on the symbiosis of all things living.
Dominic holds a bachelor in Contemporary Art from The Cape Town Creative Academy and is practicing as an independent artist. Dominic was one of the finalists in the State Of the Art competition in 2021, and has appeared in a few local group shows.
