Riptide

The painting draws us into a vortex not just of ocean currents, but of histories, ecologies, and emotional tides. With every line and shimmer of foam, Steyn evokes the complex entanglement of human and more-than-human worlds. 

Steyn considers ecological communities and their entanglements to be his teacher, saying: "I think for me, all the answers to art are in nature. All the ratios, the relationships. When we look at nature normally, it is naturally beautiful. Nature is the place where we study. This is my university."

The artwork itself has a sense of movement, dynamism and kinetic energy, which lends itself to the shimmering ways our relationships with each other are in a constant state of flux and movement.
