Running Stone
Running Stone
Van Dyk uses the focus on the running tap to bring to life the pain in the concept of waste. Water is life and so the choice of this element depicts how overlooked water and waste really is in the modern day. Running, clear and fresh, the viewer experiences a grief in witnessing the life-giving force turning into stone in the same moment before their eyes. The piece brings to light, on a small scale, the alarming macro-scale of how human beings are tending to resources and the ways in which we allow what is precious to become redundant in its power and purpose by wasting it. The abandoned, left-open tap hints at our negligence and lack of presence to perform tasks carefully and consciously, focusing on that which is with us in the present.
